Нынымытваӄэнат ыннэн нымнымык йъэлгытомгыт. Ынпычьын ӄаантано итыльын ы’ттъыётральо нитӄин. ӈинчьэн-ым Йильын ынык рачымчо. ӄол рыннин ӈэргэрык ӄаантана Йильын ивнин: ― ӄита ӄун мынаӈаӈрачвыченмык. Мэӈин ипэ эплеэн армаӈ вальын? ― Ээ, – ӄутынэ татлыгнэн. Ынӈин лыгэн нымэльэв нынымытваӄэнат. ӄонпыӈ нытэӈычьэт- ӄинэт. Рытгэватлыӄэва ӄолерыёрагтэпы Йильын люур пылӄэтгъи, наӄам ымыӈ нытэвыӄэн, ытръэч нылгитэвмэтэвӄин гытгылӄатык. ӄолё нылгиӄувчимгъуӄин тэвыльанма, чама лыгэн нивӄин: ― Алымы а’мын лыгикыргысӄыльын тылян. Ынӄо вытку ярак пыкирык, ӄамэтвама ӈэвъэнэ пынлёк: ― Нырэӄигыт о’тчой, алымы ӄаанты этиркининикэ эквэтгъи? Ынкы вытку кэтъонэн ыргин гайъэлга вэтгав. ӈотӄо нэмэ рытгэватлыӄэва, татлыгнэн ӄаанты. Ынӄо кынмал рэсӄиквъэт ярак. Йильын панэна нытвэтчатваӄэн ӈаргын, инэӈэк олеты, вытку ӈэвъэнэ а’йӈавынво витыткусӄычетгъи, ынӄо рэсӄиквъи. Рылык ӈэвъэн иквъи: — Э’тки торарамкыльытвагъа нымнымык, ытльак. Ы’вэӄучитэ рымӈылявнэн, миӈкыри гитлин. Атчьатык чимгъутэ ӄаанты нъэйӈэльэтӄин. Эргатык инъэ амэвычаӈэръа ӈытогъэ ярайпы, э’чесӄиквъи. Э’чеплыткук чит рэсӄивыркын, ытръэч гэлгийӈэръулин, ымыӈ чиниткин егыт этлы ныльунинэт. Ымыӈ инэӈ чымче вальын тэгилиӈэ льук нэналвавӄэн. ӄынвэр галгэӄэвъяӈӈолен, наӄам ымыӈ ампамъяльын, галгэгтыквыӈӈолен. ӄынвэр эвыр ӄэргаквъэ. Translation
2-06 The Shaman Brothers
Two cousins lived in a village.
The elder brother, Kaantu, owned a yaranga in the front.
According to the tradition, he was considered to be the main keeper of the village.
Everything depended on his decisions.
The younger brother’s yaranga was next to his.
Once in autumn Kaantu said to his younger brother Yilun:
― Let’s have a shamanizing contest [and see] who will wine.
― Okay, – the younger brother answered.
So they lived in peace.
Having forgotten about the agreement, Yilun was returning from the herd and suddenly started to drown.
Although he was rowing, he couldn’t reach the shore.
Being very upset, he said:
― This was a perfectly dry place.
How could I have gotten lost?
Which road did I take?
He got chilled to the bone in the water, but the lake was still immense.
Finally he reached the shore.
As soon as he touched the ground with his foot, he found himself in a completely dry place.
Looking at the former lake, [he suddenly realized that it was a place where reindeer urinated.
It was impossible to sink there!?
He had been floundering in the water like that till noon, though he had left for the yaranga at sunrise.
He thought to himself:
“What on earth happening to me?
I am drowning even in reindeer urine!?
”When he came back and started eating, his wife said:
― It took you pretty long.
Kaantu already left before sunrise.
Only then did he recall their conversation about having a shamanizing contest.
He decided to get even with his elder brother.
It was already daytime when Kaantu got off duty and went home.
The yarangas were close by.
He was following the old tracks.
But suddenly the yarangas disappeared.
He looked around and found himself sitting deep in the ground.
He was unable to get out.
He spent the night at the bottom of the ravine, and spent a while day trying to get out, but could climb out only in the evening.
Having got out, he looked around and saw that he had spent a night at the place where a reindeer had taken a step [that is, in a reindeer’s footstep].
But it seemed [to him] that he had been in a deep valley.
He said only:
― Well, Yilun can [really to play the game].
Let’s see what’s going to happen to him next.
For a while after that they went on with their lives as in the old times.
One time Yilun returned from the herd in the evening and entered the yaranga.
The fire was burning and a pot was hanging over the fire.
But his wife didn’t greet him; she even didn’t look in his direction.
What was the matter?
The fire was burning, but his wife was sitting motionless.
He called to her.
His wife didn’t answer.
He came up to her, looked closely and listened to her breath.
She was not breathing.
He was frightened and called the neighbors.
They brought her to the sleeping chamber and then had to bury her, dismembering the body.
Day and night had passed.
He was cooking in the evening and suddenly heard a noise – somebody had come riding reindeer.
He went outside.
When greeting the newcomer, he recognized the voice of his wife.
He thought to himself:
“What’s this?
We buried her.
We even cut her clothes into pieces and took the sled apart, slaughtered draught reindeer, dressed them, and brought the pelts home.
”At first he was very scared.
His face grew whiter than the snow, but then he thought:
“Maybe I was just dreaming of all this?
”He was standing, like that when Kaantu went to the harness.
[The people] all went inside the yaranga.
Yilun was still standing leaning his elbows on the cargo sled; he just shuddered when his wife called to him.
Only then did he enter the yaranga.
His wife said:
― I stayed at my mother’s place pretty long.
Her husband told [her] what had happened.
When they went to bed, he was scolding Kaantu to himself.
In the morning Yilun went outside to urinate wearing only a fur undercoat.
He was going to enter the yaranga, but couldn’t see anything, even his own feet.
There was fog all around.
There was a cargo near the yaranga, but he couldn’t even lay his hands on it.
He was cold; his legs were freezing.
He was wearing only fur stockings.
It gradually cleared up.
Everything was at its usual place – the yaranga and the cargo.
It turned out that he had gotten lost because of his own urine.
He came to his brother and said:
― That’s enough [how] let’s stop competing.
