Translation
2-19 Kaleyonav
A long time ago there lived a woman, Kaleyonav, and her husband.
They lived without children but had a dog.
The mistress was lazy; she couldn’t do anything:
neither make beautiful clothes, nor cook delicious food.
The yaranga was full of holes.
She never got up early, she [always] slept late.
Once Kaleyonav and her husband went to a festival.
Only the dog was left at home.
She became hungry.
She was walking around the yaranga
-
― What a stingy old woman!?
She has hidden all [the food]!?
Getting angry, the dog ate all the best hides and footpads of reindeer.
Being afraid of the mistress, she hid herself.
In the morning the husband came back with his wife.
When Kaleyonav saw
...that all the hides and footpads of reindeer had been eaten, she became furious.
She grabbed the dog and beat her vigorously.
In the evening they ate, but didn’t give any food to the dog.
They went to bed.
When they woke up in the morning, they saw fur trousers, fur coat, and reindeer skin boots hanging in the sleeping chamber.
The dog said to them:
― Here are your hides and footpads of reindeer.
The husband quickly put all the clothes on and ran to the neighbors.
Seeing him, the neighbors exclaimed:
― What a beautiful clothes!?
Who made them?
― Kaleyonav!?
The neighbors didn’t believe him and said: ― If your wife is so good at making clothes, we’d like to see her wearing a beautiful woman’s fur coat!?
In the evening before going to bed, Kaleyonav hit the dog.
She threw her the hides and footpads of reindeer and ordered [the dog]:
― Tomorrow I want my fur coat ready!?
The dog smelled the footpads of reindeer and hides and ate them.
When she woke up in the morning, Kaleyonav saw a woman’s fur coat and the footpads of reindeer.
Rejoicing, she put the clothes on and went to the festival.
Suddenly she started feeling a headache.
She was scared.
She lay down, but the headache got stronger.
In the morning when the husband woke up, his wife had already left for the other land, for the land where grandmothers lived.
The dog said:
― She deserves it!?
Why did she jeer at me when she was alive?
The end.
