A legend
The Udehe used to decide on engagements with young women in a certain way. The daughters’ fathers would try to choose healthy and strong young men. They would say, ‘Come into the inner part of the cottage.’ The young man would sit down. The father would say, ‘So, young man. You’ve come to find a wife for yourself. Do you come from the direction of sunrise, or some other direction?’ ‘I’ve come to be engaged to the person who will be my wife. That person is your daughter.’ ‘If you want to take my daughter as your wife, shoot an arrow. If you hit the mark, I will give her to you. If you miss, I will not.’ He would cut down a Far Eastern Acacia tree quickly, and light a fire next to the cottage, chopping the wood into many pieces with an axe. The young man would shoot arrow after arrow. The arrows would travel over the wood and the young man would not let it fall. Then the fire would burn itself out. ‘This is a strong man indeed. His eyes are also very good.’ Then they would get married. After that the young man would bring the daughter back to his own home. The end.
